Prospective Students: Student Life

Student Organizations

At Watts, involvement goes far beyond class and clinical. Want to raise money for cancer research? Take part in a health fair? Collect “Wish List” items for the Ronald McDonald House? Our students are doing this and a great deal more.

Student Government Association

The Student Government Association (SGA) serves as the voice of the student body and sponsors many of the co-curricular activities enjoyed by the school community.  This association is designed to encourage self-governance, to unite the student body, and to enhance student-faculty interactions. SGA activities promote leadership abilities and student involvement with both the school and the local community.

Students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of endeavors, including peer mentoring and various community projects. Recent undertakings include collecting coats for the Durham Rescue Mission, caroling for patients at Durham Regional Hospital, donating first aid kits to Carter Community School, and raising money for cancer research.

A new tradition started by the SGA is “School Spirit Week,” celebrating Watts’ diverse, collective, and engaged spirit. An event is coordinated by the organization at the end of each semester recognizing the accomplishments of the student body. In the past, students have enjoyed a lively bowling party, an “Eighties Party” full of music and hot fashions of the decade, and “A Day at the Park” cheering for our local baseball team, the Durham Bulls.

Association of Nursing Students

The Watts School of Nursing Association of Nursing Students is a constituent of the National Student Nurses' Association (NSNA) and the North Carolina Association of Nursing Students (NCANS). As members of ANS, students share ideas with educators and professionals at local, state, and national levels. Members are encouraged to participate in such activities as local, state and national student conferences, community service projects and mentoring programs.

Watts ANS and its individual members have won awards and scholarships at both the state and national levels. Past ANS projects include the collection of “Wish List” items for the Ronald McDonald House and the Coalition for Battered Women, collection of donations for a local family in need following a house fire, participation in area health fair projects, and numerous other smaller projects.

Nursing Christian Fellowship

Begun in 1948 as a ministry of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, Nursing Christian Fellowship (NCF) is both a professional organization and a ministry of and for nurses and nursing students.  Watts students recently started their own NCF chapter and meet for prayer, Bible discussion, mutual encouragement, and outreach.
